Tick season had a strong start, with April seeing double the emergency room visits for tick bites versus the same time last year. A tick bite can lead to a handful of serious diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and more. Is your campus in a tick-prone area, or are your students potentially traveling to high-risk regions? If so, here's how to help students stay protected against ticks: Educate students on what to do after tick bites: The dangers and what to look out for, including fever, rash, fatigue, and joint aches. Keep tweezers accessible: The best way to remove a tick is with a pair of tweezers. Keep them around so students can grab-and-go if needed. Offer EPA-registered insect repellents: When used properly and safely, insect repellents can help keep the ticks off. Stay aware and alert: Survey your area and keep tabs on tick-borne diseases in your school's region. If your local health department has seen a rise in disease, encourage students to be extra cautious outside. Resource: Centers for Disease Prevention and Control. (2026, Apr 23).
